Common name: ammonium borate, chemical formula: NH4B2O8·5H2O, relative molecular weight: 272.15.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Ammonium borate is colorless bipyramidal crystals of orthOrhombic system. It is soluble in water, but insoluble in alcohol. Between 0~90℃, ammonium borate is stable solid and includes tetraborate and pentaborate. These two borates have the same moisture content and a wide range of conditions for existence. When heated to above 90℃, ammonium borate decomposes ammonium. When heated to 150℃, 75% crystal water loses, but there are ammonium losses of less than 1%. At temperature of 200℃ and pressure of 133Pa, ammonium borate contains only 1.15mol (4.85%) of crystal water and the ammonium loss is 2%. At high temperatures, it converts into boron trioxide with a small amount of ammonium.
